Phil's Best Button Quail

 New for 2020!

Barbary Partridge

The Barbary partridge is a small game bird that is native to North Africa, Gibraltar and the Canary Islands. It has been introduced to Portugal and Madeira and Sardinia. The Barbary partridge is a rotund bird, with a gray-brown back, gray breast and buff belly. The face is light gray with a broad reddish-brown gorget. It has rufous-streaked white flanks and red legs. When disturbed, it prefers to run rather than fly, but if necessary it flies a short distance on rounded wings.

It is closely related to its western European equivalent, the Red Legged Partridge or Chukar. It is similar to the red-legged partridge, but it has a different head and beautiful lacing on the neck. This bird prefers to be kept in pairs as they can become quite quarrelsome with each other. We have managed our Barbary’s in a colony set up for many years, but we understand from many other breeders that this is not the norm for this breed. They enjoy a good dust bath and do not seem to be bothered by the sun or the heat here in Arizona, many a time we have found them laying out in the sun on 110 degree days! They are good layers of a small, lightly speckled brown egg. We have found that our birds hatch about 2 days after the chukars do so you should allow 25-27 days for incubation. The chicks are relatively easy to raise with very good livability rates, especially when started in our Phil’s Best Starter Brooder Kit.
